Are Brooches Back in Style? Every Receipt in the Comeback Points Somewhere Else

Pinterest defines the trend as 'a vintage piece inherited from family.' The Oscars ran on a vintage Van Cleef and a Tiffany design from 1965. Then the shopping lists load up on brand-new crystal pins, which makes this the rare comeback where the new thing is the dupe.

On August 5, Good Morning America’s shopping desk called brooches “one of the hottest trends of 2026” and lined up fourteen to buy, from an $8.99 rhinestone conch on Amazon to a $370 crystal statement piece, with a $189 Swarovski dragonfly in between. The evidence behind the call is real, for once. Pinterest logged searches for “brooch aesthetic” up 110 percent going into the year. Tory Burch, Ralph Lauren, and Armani pinned them down their Autumn/Winter 2026 runways. And at the Oscars in March, lapel pins ran so thick that Sharp filed them as the defining menswear detail of the night, on Pedro Pascal, Adrien Brody, Leonardo DiCaprio, and one guest wearing at least ten.

The search bar takes the news differently. “Are brooches back in style” autocompletes word for word, so does “are brooches in style 2026,” and then the suggestions turn anxious: “are brooches for old ladies,” and my favorite, “how to wear a brooch and not look old.” A reasonable fear. Also, as it turns out, a misreading of what’s actually being sold.

Because the receipts for this comeback all point the same direction, and it’s not toward anything new. Pinterest’s own trend write-up describes the piece in question as “a vintage piece inherited from family, discovered in a shop,” and logs “heirloom jewelry” up 45 percent right alongside. Shaboozey’s 16-carat diamond brooch at the Oscars was a vintage Van Cleef & Arpels, placed by the jeweler Briony Raymond. Robert Downey Jr.’s Bird on a Rock is a Tiffany piece that Jean Schlumberger designed in 1965. And Mozeris, a London antiques dealer riding the wave, reports the run is on Victorian, Art Nouveau, and Edwardian stock, the birds and insects and flowers.

The coronation is also a rerun, which regular readers will recognize as a pattern. Variety named the brooch “the menswear accessory of choice” at the 2025 Oscars, a full year earlier, and Joe Alwyn wore one to both ceremonies. Sharp opened its 2026 coverage by noting it had been “expounding on the importance of brooches” 18 months prior. Like the peplum comeback, this trend arrived wearing a “suddenly” it hasn’t earned.

Now hold the evidence against the checkout page. Thirteen of GMA’s fourteen picks are new production: Anne Klein imitation pearls at $16, a Chico’s tiger at $20.99, an ASOS moon at $12.99, a 24-pack of pearl safety pins for $9.99. One pick is the tell, an Etsy listing for a vintage Monet sun face at $23.99, the list conceding mid-scroll where the good stuff lives.

How much does a vintage brooch cost?

On Poshmark, the first page of “vintage brooch” asks $10 to $49, and most of it sits under $25: a fish, a giraffe, a poinsettia, a dragonfly with an articulated tail at $25. Those are asking prices, not sold ones, so knock some off. The shape still holds. The $189 new dragonfly costs seven of the old ones. Most trends work the other way around, with a cheap copy chasing an expensive original. Here the original is the cheap one, and the brand-new pin is the imitation of your grandmother’s taste.

How do you wear a brooch and not look old?

Old is the entire pitch, and no amount of styling gets around it: Pinterest’s word for the piece is “heirloom,” the dealers’ word is “antique,” and the red carpet’s proof pieces were 16 carats of somebody’s history. You don’t style the age away, you wear it as provenance, same as the animal-print accessories that survived every verdict this summer by being small, old, and already owned. My verdict runs the same direction. Skip the $189 tier entirely. Check whatever jewelry box your family keeps first, because the canonical version of this trend costs nothing and comes with a story. And if the box is empty, the fish is ten dollars.
