Ask the internet what Chanel ballet flats cost and you’ll get a confident answer from 2021. Are Chanel ballet flats cheaper in Paris?

The same G02819 pair that costs $1,075 in the US is £820 on Chanel’s UK site and 960 euros on the French one, checked the same morning. Those three stickers aren’t comparing like with like, though. The European prices already include 20 percent VAT, and the US price adds sales tax at the register, the same asymmetry that made UK stickers look kinder on the high street. Tourists can claim part of the French VAT back, which is where the “buy them in Paris” advice comes from, and I won’t pretend to know what your refund would net after the paperwork.

Here’s the part I’d actually act on. The autocomplete around this shoe is full of people hunting the year the price was fair, typing in every city from Paris to Tokyo like the old sticker might still be alive somewhere. That year is gone. The $990 Alaïa fishnet pair played the same trick, climbing 15.5 percent in two years while everyone argued about dupes. Ballet flats as a category will survive fine without your panic purchase. Handbag forums treat every increase rumor as a starting gun. You don’t have to.
