When Do Summer Clothes Go on Clearance? J.Crew's Two End-of-Summer Racks Hold 372 Things (Twenty Are Suits)

J.Crew has a rack named after a season that hasn’t finished happening. The End of Summer Sale went live before the holiday it’s timed to, and on Sunday morning it held 205 women’s items and 167 men’s ones. Labor Day is September 7. It is August 23.

Every guide that gets returned for this question says roughly the same thing, and says it without counting anything. Navy Federal’s month-by-month shopping calendar files summer apparel under July, when “summer clothes hit clearance racks at steep markdowns as stores make room for fall arrivals.” TODAY’s commerce desk ran the number in its headline last week: up to 80% off. Forbes Vetted, in a roundup published August 18 by Kara Cuzzone and Jordan Thomas, called Reformation’s early offer “up to 50% off” while noting that “we’re still a few weeks out from the official holiday.” Three sources, one week, no inventory.

The convenient thing about J.Crew is that it counts for you. Every filter on the sale page prints the number of items sitting behind it, which means you can read the shape of a markdown without clicking into a single product page, and the numbers below are one page load per filter, taken the morning of August 23 on the US site.

It’s what the site returned to me, not a warehouse census. I haven’t had any of these clothes in my hands.

When do summer clothes go on clearance?

At J.Crew on August 23, the women’s End of Summer Sale ran 205 items and 154 of them sat under 40% off. The deep end of the rack was thirteen items. On the men’s side the split was starker: 167 items, 106 under 40% off, and exactly one thing in the store priced at 60% or better. Two departments, 372 items between them, fourteen at the depth the guides describe as the reason to wait.

One honesty note on that table. The men’s four bands add to exactly 167, which is the whole rack, while the women’s add to 235 against a 205 total, because roughly thirty styles carry a price range rather than a price and get counted in two bands at once.

Either way, the bottom row is small.

When do Labor Day clothing sales start?

Labor Day 2026 falls on Monday, September 7, and the shopping weekend opens two days earlier. “You can score deals the whole weekend starting on Sept. 5,” wrote Annie Shigo, associate commerce editor at TODAY, in a post updated on August 18. So the rack I counted is a fortnight early, which sounds like an argument for waiting until it fills out.

It is, partly. J.Crew’s own “new, last 4 weeks” filter returned 27 of the 205 women’s items and 5 of the men’s, which means the sale is being fed, not just drained. A rack that adds twenty-seven pieces in a month is a rack that will look different on the 5th. What that filter can’t tell you is whether the new arrivals come in at the depth you’re waiting for, and today’s answer to that is thirteen items and one item. We looked at the same question from the other end when the Labor Day sale claims themselves went under audit.

When do summer clothes leave the shops?

Not on the schedule the rack’s name implies. Of 205 women’s items, the beach filter returned 32 and linen returned 22, against 47 in plain cotton. Swim came to 18 across the two swim fabrics. Straw, four. Crochet, two. Eyelet, one. Gauze, one.

Then look at what else is standing on a rack called End of Summer. The men’s side lists 20 suits and tuxedos, 14 sweaters, 11 blazers, and 19 casual shirts against 30 pairs of shorts. Shorts still outnumber suits on that rack, and the beach filter is doing real work. The women’s side is milder about it, listing two coats and jackets, one cashmere entry and one blazer. But nobody googling this question is picturing a tuxedo.

The label describes the calendar. It doesn’t describe the contents, and the contents are what your money touches.

Will your size still be on the sale rack?

Filter the women’s sale to one size and the count comes back between 74 and 89, out of 205. Run the identical filter on J.Crew’s full-price women’s clothing page, 510 items, and it comes back between 222 and 298, with medium the high mark on both, 89 on the sale rack against 298 on the floor.

Read the right-hand column as roughly 57% of the floor for a middle size, and the left as roughly 43% of the rack. Some of that gap is arithmetic rather than attrition, since the sale’s 205 includes 14 accessories, 3 bags and 2 hair pieces that never had a size to lose, and the ends of the run thin out on both sides, which is what always happens. What the filter is telling you is narrower than “sold out.” It’s still worth knowing before you plan a weekend around a rack.

When do summer clothes go on sale in the UK?

British summer sales open in June and by late August they are visibly deeper than this. Reading Zara’s UK womenswear sale the same weekend, we counted 22 marked-down items running 30% to 54% off, median 46%, and the stock behind those tags was summer through and through: linen blazers, linen-blend bermudas, capri trousers, poplin tops. That’s the rack the American guides are describing. It’s just in a different country, on a sale calendar that started nine weeks earlier.

If you’re shopping US sites this week, the useful question isn’t when the clearance starts, because it started. The question is whether the thing you want is one of the thirteen, and the answer is almost always no, which is roughly the same arithmetic that makes buying fall pieces now a bad trade.

Wait for September 5 if you like. The rack will still be there, and it still won’t be the one you were promised.
