What Happens If You Return Something Bought With Kohl's Cash? It Depends Which Side of the Coupon Your Item Was On
Kohl's, Old Navy and Macy's all publish what their store cash does when merchandise comes back. We read the three sets of terms on the same September morning and lined the clauses up.
On the morning of September 10, 2026, the page Macy’s keeps for the fine print of Macy’s Money printed exactly one pair of dates: December 16 to 24, 2024.
Store cash isn’t a balance sitting somewhere with your name on it. It’s a coupon governed by two dates, one that decides when you can pick it up and one that decides when it dies, and the distance between those two dates is the whole product. Everything the shopper experiences as generosity lives in the first date. Everything the retailer gets back lives in the second. Three American chains publish the paperwork for this, and the paperwork is where the arrangement stops being coy.
So take the part you actually play. You’re the one holding the slip, either a paper coupon that printed at the register under a jacket you’d have bought anyway, or an email that arrived within 24 hours of checkout, and you have a rough memory of a number and no memory at all of the sentence underneath it. That sentence is the subject here. We didn’t shop any of these stores and nothing below rests on anyone’s account of a good afternoon at the mall. We read what Kohl’s, Old Navy and Macy’s publish, on one morning, in the order a shopper meets it.
What happens if you return something bought with Kohl’s Cash?
Kohl’s publishes two different answers, and which one applies depends on whether the coupon was born in that transaction or spent in it. On the earning side, the terms read: “If merchandise purchased earning a Kohl’s Cash coupon is returned or price adjusted, the value of the Kohl’s Cash coupon earned and/or the amount of the merchandise refund will be reduced to reflect any unearned value.” On the spending side, one sentence later: “Return value of merchandise purchased with a Kohl’s Cash coupon may be subject to adjustment.”
Read those twice and notice which noun is doing the moving. It isn’t only the coupon. The refund is adjustable too.
Old Navy says it in fewer words. “If you return some or all the merchandise purchased with a Super Cash coupon, the dollar value discount of the Super Cash coupon will not be refunded or credited back.” Macy’s does the same thing with arithmetic instead of adjectives: points come off for the returned item, and if the account is short, “any outstanding Star Money rewards will be reduced by 1¢ per point,” and if those are gone too, “we may reduce the value of your returned purchase by 1¢ per point.”
None of that makes the discount fictional. Ten dollars off fifty at a Kohl’s earn event is 20% at the till, the Kohl’s Rewards day rate of 5% is a real rate, and a shopper who was buying school clothes that week and goes back for boots inside the window has genuinely paid less. The question is what the instrument does to everyone else, which is what the second date is for.
How long does store cash actually last?
Thirty days is the answer at two of the three chains, and the two thirties are not the same thing. Kohl’s converts a rewards balance of $5 or more into a digital coupon “on or about the first day of the following month,” and “each Kohl’s Cash coupon shall expire 30 days after issuance.” A balance that never reaches the $5 threshold rides along until it doesn’t: “If your Kohl’s Rewards Balance is less than $5 for more than 12 months, then it will automatically expire.”
Macy’s issues $10 of Star Money at 1,000 points, valid “for 30 calendar days from issuance,” forfeited “at midnight Eastern Time on the expiration date.” Then comes the clause that separates a careful reader from a confident one. Spend part of a reward and the leftover does not restart. It “is valid for 30 calendar days from the date the Star Money reward was originally issued.” Partial use buys you nothing but a shorter fuse.
Old Navy’s public program page is the interesting one, because it explains Super Cash at length and never prints the current pair of dates. “The coupons can be earned and redeemed during specific redeem periods throughout the year. Don’t worry, we’ll let you know when those times are.” That page does print other dates in the same breath, noting a program change on 6/6/2026 and a coupon-wallet feature “starting 9/26/2026,” so the omission isn’t a rendering failure at our end. The cycle dates simply live on the coupon and in the advertising, not in the terms. What the terms do commit to is the ending: “Any unused Super Cash coupons remaining after the valid redemption period are forfeited.”
Do you have to spend more to use it?
Old Navy attaches a second minimum purchase to the redemption, and this is the mechanism most shoppers describe wrongly to themselves. The coupon you earned by spending $25 or more comes back as a tiered redemption: $20 off if you spend $50 to $99.99, $40 off if you spend $100 to $149.99, $60 off if you spend $150 or more. Undershoot and the page is explicit about what that costs: you may spend less than the threshold, “but you will only receive a corresponding lower value discount based on the applicable amount you spend. You will forfeit the remaining potential Super Cash value from that coupon.” One coupon per transaction, a $60 ceiling, no stacking with other coupons or promotions, nothing at other Gap Inc. brands, nothing at the clearance centers.
The grammar at Kohl’s runs the other way. Its coupons are redeemable “with any other coupon,” and the sequencing is printed: dollar-off coupons apply before percent-off-total coupons, which is the order that leaves the percentage a smaller pile to work on.
If you’ve read our piece on what extra 50% off actually means, it’s the same arithmetic wearing different clothes.
| Kohl’s Cash | Old Navy Super Cash | Macy’s Star Money | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How it appears | $10 per $50 at an earn event, or 5% daily as rewards | Coupon for spending $25+ in the earn window | $10 issued at 1,000 points |
| Life | 30 days from issuance | Until the stated redemption period ends | 30 calendar days, midnight ET |
| Second minimum to spend it | None stated | Yes, $50 / $100 / $150 tiers | None stated |
| Stacks with other coupons | Yes | No | Not addressed in these terms |
| If you return the merchandise | Coupon value and refund both reducible | Coupon value not refunded or credited | Points reversed, then rewards, then refund |
What can’t you buy with it?
Exclusion lists are where these three documents agree most closely, and what they agree on is that store cash may not leave the merchandise floor. Kohl’s blocks its coupon from Sephora at Kohl’s, from Kohl’s Cares cause merchandise, from gift cards, from price adjustments on earlier purchases, from any card balance, and from “any services or fees, including taxes and shipping.” Star Money may not be exchanged for cash, spent on Macy’s gift cards, used for services, applied to an account, or used on anything shipping outside the US. Old Navy’s minimums exclude gift cards, shipping and handling, packaging, gift wrap and taxes from the count in both directions.
The Macy’s Money promotional page adds a list long enough to read as a map of the store’s margins: Backstage, Beauty Box, gift and e-gift cards, leased departments, furniture, mattresses, restaurants, rugs, tech, third-party sellers.
There’s a family resemblance to the rules we found when we read which stores charge you to send things back, and a sharper one to what becomes of store credit when the store itself closes. A gift card is your money in their custody. Store cash never was.
Which brings back that Macy’s page, still advertising a window that closed on Christmas Eve of 2024. On the way in, it looked like neglect. It isn’t. A currency whose dates are printed on the slip in your hand, and nowhere else, is precisely the currency whose fine-print page has no dates to keep current. The page is accurate about the product. The two dates were never meant to live at an address you could bookmark.
If you’re holding one right now, the useful move is small: find the second date before you plan the second trip, and check whether the trip has a minimum attached. Everything else in these documents is written for the version of you who doesn’t.
