Toteme Scarf Jacket Dupe: 'Wool Blend' Runs From 100% Wool to None, and the $1,190 Original Is Neither
The scarf jacket is heading into yet another fall and the copies now outnumber the coat. I opened the fiber line on the original and six of the lookalikes the roundups keep recommending, on the same day, and wrote the percentages into one table. The phrase on the tag stays the same all the way down. The number behind it doesn't.

The scarf jacket is coming back for another fall, and this year the copies arrive first. Type “toteme scarf jacket dupe” and Google finishes it for you: “amazon,” “zara,” “best.” The searches have a reason to exist. On Toteme’s own site this week, several sizes of the embroidered original sit behind a Notify Me button, and the roundups that rank the lookalikes mostly compare silhouettes and prices, not what the things are made of.
We haven’t worn any of these. What we did was open the fiber line on the original and six of the recommended copies, all on the same day, and write down the words exactly as each page prints them.

Read the middle column top to bottom. The percentage falls from 100 to 88 to 70 to 47 to zero to unknowable, and almost every row wears some version of the same word. That’s the whole trick of “wool blend,” a phrase we’ve caught at 33% before. It has no floor.
What is the Toteme scarf jacket made of?
Toteme’s Embroidered Scarf Jacket prints 88% wool, certified to the Responsible Wool Standard with a Control Union license number on the product page, and 12% polyester. Which makes the first row the one that rearranged my assumptions: the $1,190 original is not the 100% wool option in its own category. The only 100% wool fiber line in the table belongs to the $200 copy, a fact Quince has noticed, since its page runs a comparison chart with a “100% Merino Wool” row and a polite No under Toteme’s name.
What does “faux wool” mean on a jacket?
Faux wool names no fiber, and on Kensie’s scarf-collar jacket at Macy’s the composition line printed underneath it reads “100% Polyester.” Down the ladder, the words start doing more work than the fibers. The first Amazon listing manages three answers on one page: wool blend in the title, faux wool in the bullets, “Polycotton” in the materials table, and you can’t buy it anyway. The second one is in stock at $43.69 and never names a fiber at all. Under the Wool Products Labeling Act, a garment sold as containing wool has to state the wool’s percentage by weight. A listing that says “wool blend” up top and nothing underneath isn’t a blend. It’s a headline.
There’s one more line worth reading, and it isn’t on the tag. Toteme’s US returns policy deducts a $10 fee from your refund, per its own shipping page. Quince gives you 365 days free, J.Crew charges $7.50 by mail, and we’ve read those policy pages the same way across ten retailers. On an oversized jacket you’ll probably size-debate, the return line is part of the price.
A note on what’s missing: Zara’s scarf coat page from last winter now renders as an empty shell, and Abercrombie’s removable-scarf coat sits behind a bot wall, so neither made the table. We don’t list what we couldn’t read.
So the actual choice is narrower than the roundups make it look. If the word you’re paying for is wool, one page in the table says 100% and ships today, and Quince prints its own cost math ($39.62 in materials, $103.87 all in) the way it does on cashmere. If you want lighter and looser, J.Crew’s 70/30 is already on color-by-color sale in August, which tells you something about where its price is headed. And if a listing can’t hold one fiber story from title to materials table, that’s not a dupe. The trench copies split the same way: the tag always answered first.
The jacket’s whole appeal is that it does your accessorizing for you. The least it can do is tell you what it’s made of.
